Remembering Frank Purpura
Members of Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Amici d’Italia Lodge #2791, proudly participated in the We Can Be Heroes Foundation’s Annual D-Day Remembrance Event held June 6, 2026, at Salem Centre Auditorium in Jacksonville.
The program honored World War II veterans while remembering Francis Anthony “Frank” Purpura, a World War II D-Day Purple Heart veteran and beloved member of Amici d’Italia Lodge #2791.
At age 18, Frank Purpura served in World War II as a Higgins Boat driver aboard LST-356. On June 6, 1944, he helped unload soldiers on the beaches of Normandy. While heading to the beach on his first trip, he was struck above his right eye by shrapnel from flying debris, was patched up, and quickly returned to duty.
Frank made more than 50 trips between Utah, Sword, and other beaches delivering men, ammunition, and supplies. The LST-356 participated in several different actions, earning three battle stars.
For Amici d’Italia Lodge, Frank was more than a decorated veteran. He was a faithful and loyal member, often hosting board meetings in his home, where the backyard was an orchard of fruit trees. He served as Sergeant-at-Arms for many years and proudly walked in Jacksonville Veterans Day parades for decades.
During the ceremony, Immediate Past President Annette Guarino shared personal memories of Frank and reflected on his humility, patriotism, and service. Following Frank’s passing, the Lodge unanimously voted to name its annual scholarship the Francis Anthony “Frank” Purpura Memorial Scholarship in perpetuity.
The event also featured Guest of Honor Retired Navy Captain Greg Streeter, Rich Jones of WOKV and John Scott as emcees, the Black Creek Young Marines of Orange Park Honor Guard, and retired Young Marine Nativity Teague, who spoke about her visit to Normandy.
